Police say the recovery of cars from the centre of Christchurch is now at the halfway point.

About 2500 cars have been retrieved from the central business district.

Senior Sergeant Graham Reeves says around 5000 cars were believed to be there.

The operation has retrieved cars from most of the public car parks in the CBD.

Senior Sergeant Reeves says hundreds of keys have been registered with the recovery team at their base in Hagley Park.

But he says hundreds more keys are urgently needed from owners who still have vehicles located in the CBD.
