AMI Stadium turf not insured

The owners of Christchurch's AMI Stadium are defending the decision not to insure the ground's turf.

The Government has agreed to pay $4 million to fix the stadium's pitch, which was badly damaged in February's earthquake.

Stadium owner V-Base says it owns and operates four businesses in Christchurch, all of which are very well-insured, but that typically, land, parks and sports grounds are not insured.

V-Base chief executive Bryan Pearson says until last September, earthquakes were not considered a high risk for the city.

In hindsight, he says, his company would have preferred if the turf had been included in the insurance.

Rugby World Cup matches planned for at the stadium are to be moved from Christchurch.
