The Earthquake Commission (EQC) has received 75,000 claims from last month's Christchurch earthquake.

The Commission more than 300,000 claims for all the major aftershocks and earthquakes in Canterbury since the 4 September 2010 earthquake.

The commission's rapid assessement programme, launched in the past 10 days, ranks houses into categories of damage and tells homeowners when they can expect their full EQC assessment, which can take up to five hours.

The Commission says the assessments started in the most affected suburbs. Staff are working through several thousand properties each day, focussing on those needing emergency repairs.

The number of assessors on the programme will increase from 150 to 350 this week.
