Christchurch students returning to original schools

The number of Christchurch students enrolled in schools in other places around the country has dropped for the first time since last month's earthquake.

The Ministry of Education says more than 600 students have now returned to their original schools and it expects the trend to continue.

Education Minister Anne Tolley says 157 schools in Christchurch will have reopened by Wednesday - 97% of all schools in the city.

By Monday, 76% of all early childhood education services in Christchurch will be operating.

Mrs Tolley says about 7000 students have yet to return to Christchurch and some may not return before next term, while others may not return to Christchurch.

The Ministry of Education says emergency funding for those services will be extended until at least the end of the month.
