Hagley Park trees being felled for safety reasons

Civil Defence says work began on Thursday night to fell 24 large trees in Hagley Park because of the significant risk they pose to public safety.

The trees, mostly oaks, are all near the Armagh St carpark entrance. Most of them are oaks and all have severe root damage caused by liquefaction and ground disturbance.

Two fellow trees came down during the 22 February earthquake.

More trees along the south New Brighton coastline are also being inspected for stability on Friday.

Civil Defence is urging residents take care around all large trees in Christchurch, as the damage to root systems in many cases is so severe that high winds and aftershocks could bring them down.
