About 200 evacuees from the Christchurch earthquake have registered as living in the Bay of Plenty area, the regional council says.

Council chairman John Cronin says there are probably many more than that and he is urging evacuees to register with the council and Red Cross, so emergency services and family and friends from overseas can conact them.

Civil Defence in Otago is also urging evacuees from Christchurch to register with the Red Cross.

In Bay of Plenty, there are registration centers in Tauranga, Rotorua, Opotiki , Whakatane and Kawerau.

The Red Cross can be contacted on 0800 RED CROSS or 0800 733 276.
