Water for all hopefully within a week

The Christchurch City Council's water and waste management organisation says 78% of the city now has water reconnected, and it hopes to have the rest connected within a week.

As for electricity, it has now been restored to 89% of people in Christchurch, leaving 22,000 customers still without - about 15,500 of them in the New Brighton and Dallington areas.

Meanwhile, crews working to clear Christchurch streets removed 50,000 tonnes of silt and sludge on Thursday alone.

Just over 200,000 tonnes has been removed since the quake; most of it has been trucked to the Burwood landfill. More than 400 contractors are doing the work.
