HMNZS Canterbury is on its way back to Wellington to collect more cargo for the Christchurch earthquake recovery effort.
The navy supply ship has already dropped off water, food, medical supplies and vehicles.
It left Lyttelton Harbour on Wednesday afternoon and will be fully loaded with cargo before returning.
The supplies will include heavy machinery like diggers and bulldozers.
