Work and Income has phoned 10,234 elderly, disabled and vulnerable Cantabrians who may be alone and distressed following a powerful devastating earthquake on Tuesday.

Staff are working their way through a list of 14,500 people and phoning clients because staff are unable to physically get around Christchurch.

Social Development Minister Paula Bennett says 3311 people have answered the calls.

Staff needed to send emergency help and home visits to a small number, but most are coping well.

About 50 elderly people have been referred to welfare centres which are operating at Burnside High School, Cowles Stadium, Pioneer Stadium and Rangiora Baptist Church.
