Outlying areas in the Canterbury region appeared to have escaped relatively unscathed from the latest earthquake to hit the region.
The 6.3-magnitude quake struck at 12.51pm and was centred 10km south-east of the city at a depth of 5km.
The Civil Defence in Timaru said the shock did not feel as violent as the 7.1-magnitude quake that struck on 4 September last year, and all infrastructure and services appeared to be unaffected.
The Ashburton District Council was reporting no injuries or damage to infrastructure.
Both Timaru and Ashburton said they have staff on stand-by to help in Christchurch when requested.
Akaroa Hospital said there are no reports of injuries in the area.
The Selwyn and Waimakariri district councils also reported less damage than was experienced in Christchurch.
The Selwyn District Council said it was still evaluating its water and sewerage systems, but any damage appeared minimal.
The mayor of Waimakariri, David Ayers, said there appeared to be no injuries in the area.
