The Earthquake Commission says some assessors have been dismissed for failing to meet its requirements when dealing with claimants in Canterbury.
About 1000 extra personnel were taken on to assess claims from the magnitude 7.1 earthquake on 4 September.
But EQC chief executive Ian Simpson told Summer Report that just under 10 have been dismissed because they did not work out for a variety of reasons.
But, he said, it was important to remember that the assessors are working under a huge amount of pressure.
Mr Simpson said the number of people working on assessments has grown to more than 1000 since the quake.
He said people with experience in the insurance industry are being sought to maintain staff numbers.
However, Mr Simpson said feedback on the EQC's handling of claims has been overwhelmingly positive.
