Canterbury was hit by two aftershocks in relatively quick succession on Friday morning.
The first, at 6.17am, was magnitude 4.4. It was centred 30km south-east of Darfield at a depth of 5km.
It was followed by a magnitude 4.2 quake at 6.29am, which was centred in the same place, but 12km deep.
