Residents of popular holiday spots Wanaka and Queenstown have banded together to offer Canterbury people affected by the earthquake free weekend accommodation.

A group lead by Wanaka local Kaz von Heraud-Parker have set up a page on the social networking site Facebook, called Breakfromquake Wanaka.

The group says Lake Wanaka Tourism, Destination Queenstown and the district council support the project.

Ms Heraud-Parker says free accommodation is being offered by various providers in both towns for next weekend.

She says checks will be done to ensure people applying are victims of the quake.
