Council appeals to rubberneckers to stay away

Waimakariri District Council is asking people to avoid making sightseeing trips to the Kaiapoi and Pines Beach areas over the weekend, as the number of visitors is causing distress and holding up recovery.

Chief executive Jim Palmer says sightseers' vehicles have been clogging up the roads, which means contractors' vehicles cannot gain access to worksites.

Mr Palmer says he suspects a significant number of people will be planning to visit the area at the weekend.

The area appreciates the concern, he says, but unless there is essential business, stay away.
