The company operating water and sewage systems in Christchurch says it hopes to have all of the city's water supply reconnected by later on Wednesday.
City Care reconnected about 100 streets around the city on Tuesday, but more than 60 streets remain without water.
Chief executive Onno Mulder says he is optimistic the remaining streets will be reconnected on Wednesday, although he expects supply and wastewater problems to continue for at least the next six months.
Mr Mulder says some streets had up to 15 breaks in their water mains.
He says his crews are fatigued and stressed, but they continue to turn up to work, even though some have lost their homes.
