Work has begun on fitting Christchurch's "cardboard cathedral" with cardboard.

The temporary Anglican cathedral is being clad with six-metre cardboard tubes, each weighing 120kg.

The first of them were being placed on a steel frame of the building by a construction company on Monday.

Up to six a day will be put up during this stage of construction, which is expected to take about three weeks.

Up to 100 tubes will eventually be installed.

The structure is designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban.
