Christchurch's battered eastern suburbs are the focus of a nine-day walking festival.

The festival is the first of its kind to be held in the earthquake-hit city and includes 22 group walks tailored to suit all ages and abilities.

It began on Saturday morning with a child-friendly walk around Bottle Lake Forest Park.

Christchurch mayor Bob Parker says each walk is designed to highlight community resilience despite the quakes that have devastated parts of the eastern suburbs.

Mr Parker says each walk will showcase the many gems still on offer in these suburbs.
