Chance to implode building up for auction

The chance to detonate the first earthquake damaged building in Christchurch to be destroyed by implosion is being auctioned to raise funds for one of the city's historic theatres.

Naylor Love and Ceres NZ, the contractors responsible for the demolition of the 14-storey Radio Network House on 5 August, have agreed to auction the chance to push the button which will trigger the implosion of the building.

The auction, which is being run through the Canterbury earthquake heritage buildings fund, was launched on Tuesday morning on TradeMe.

The winning contribution will be put towards the restoration of the Isaac Theatre Royal.

The Government has pledged to match dollar-for-dollar (up to $10 million) all money raised by the fund.
