Insurance payment timelines demanded

Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority chief executive Roger Sutton is taking a hard line over the need for insurers to provide homeowners with clear timeframes for when earthquake repairs will be carried out.

This follows calls from Christchurch City Council for a tribunal to be set up to resolve insurance issues.

Only a quarter of insurance claims from the February 2010 earthquake have been settled.

On Thursday Mr Sutton told a meeting of city council members he wants to see private insurers provide the sort of timeframes the Earthquake Commission is now giving people around when work would be carried out.

Mr Sutton says he will communicate these concerns when he meets insurance company executives on Friday.

He says the timeframes would allow people to begin planning their lives.
