The Government has announced about $2 million worth of funding for 25 new housing units for vulnerable Christchurch people.

Housing Minister Phil Heatley says the money from the Government's Social Housing Unit will be distributed between two projects led by non-government organisations.

Mr Heatley says the projects will target people with intellectual disabilities, head injuries or mental health issues, or who are socially disadvantaged such as refugees or the homeless.

The largest grant of $1.3 million has gone to the Comcare Charitable Trust which is heading the development of 20 single person flats throughout the city.

The other $750,000 grant will go towards a $1.8 million project in the suburb of Sydenham, led by Access Properties NZ Limited.
