Contradiction seen between words and deeds

Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee says there is a contradiction in Christchurch City Council calling for action from the Government on housing, as it evicts 20 tenants from one of its own housing complexes.

Tenants at Reg Stilwell Place in New Brighton were given seven days to leave after the council discovered the premises did not meet new building standards and were prone to earthquake damage.

Mr Brownlee says he finds it surprising that city councillors can push for more action from the Government while at the same time allowing tenants in council owned flats to be evicted.

He says social agencies are now working with the tenants to try to find them alternative accommodation.
