Damaged pine trees in public garden being felled

Removal of 60 earthquake-damaged trees from a Christchurch public garden gets underway next week.

The mature pine and macrocarpa trees in Blighs Garden in the coastal suburb of New Brighton are either dead or dying and are unsafe and work to fell them begins on 6 June.

Christchurch City Council arborist Shane Moohan says the damage is due to a rise in the water table caused by the earthquake on 22 February 2011.

Mr Moohan says the remaining 200 trees in the stand are also showing signs of damage and he suspects they will also have to be felled.

He says replanting options for the garden are being discussed.
