The Red Cross has announced a new grant of $10,000 for the families of people killed in the February 2011 earthquake in Christchurch.

The Red Cross 2011 Earthquake Commission grant follows an initial payment of $10,000 to bereaved families in March last year.

The head of the commission says many of those who donated to the Earthquake Appeal gave money to help the families of those killed and injured.

Sir John Hansen says feedback indicates many of the bereaved families are still struggling financially, especially those who have been left as the sole parent.

Last year, 186 families received the bereaved person's grant.

The Red Cross says it is also giving more help to 23 people seriously injured in the quake.
