The New Zealand biotechnology company Lanzatech has struck a deal to supply low-carbon jet fuel to the Virgin Atlantic airline.

Lanzatech has developed a technology that captures waste gases from industrial steel production and ferments and converts them to low-carbon fuels, including jet fuel.

The technology is currently being piloted in New Zealand, a larger demonstration plant will be set up in Shanghai this year, and the first commercial operation will begin in China by 2013.

Virgin Atlantic plans to run a demonstration flight using the new fuels within two years.
