The Port of Tauranga is picking container volumes to increase by as much as a quarter after securing a major shipping line as its only New Zealand stop.
The Mediterranean Shipping Company's, new Oceania Express Service, which travels between New Zealand, Australia, South American and the United States, will begin in October.
Along with five other services, Port of Tauranga says container volumes will jump 20 - 25% this year, with about 40% of the increase due to cargo shifted between ships at the port.
