Apple hopes to maintain market share with iPad 2

A technology analyst says Apple will struggle to maintain its domination of the tablet computer market, despite releasing yet another shiny new creation; the iPad 2.

Apple chief executive Steve Jobs launched the iPad 2 in San Francisco on Thursday.

Users have been promised a faster processor and cameras, in a tablet which is thinner and lighter than Apple's first iPad.

The first version secured a whopping 90% of the tablet market last year.

The company hopes the iPad 2 will help it to fend off competition from the likes of Samsung, Motorola and Hewlett-Packard.

An analyst at technology consultancy Ovum Tim Renowden says Apple hopes the iPad 2 will enable it to consolidate its position in the market, which is expected to more than double in size over the year.

He says he believes Apple's market share will decrease, although the number of units it sells will increase.
