Higher fuel costs raise Qantas fares

Qantas Airways says higher fuel costs are behind its decision to lift ticket prices for domestic and trans-Tasman services by up to 5% later this month.

Last week, the airline announced that fuel surcharges on international flights will rise by almost 50% on certain routes.

Qantas says fuel surcharges for domestic, regional and trans-Tasman flights were removed in 2009 and a "modest fare increase" is the best way to deal with the rise in fuel prices.

The airline says Jetstar, its low-cost subsidiary, will adjust fares and increase some charges to meet the increased costs.
