Sales of fairtrade products in New Zealand more than doubled in the past year, largely because chocolate makers Cadbury and Whittakers adopted the standard.

Fairtrade certification ensures minimum prices for producers in developing countries, enabling them to compete internationally.

New Zealand sales of fairtrade certified products reached $36.6 million in 2010, with sales of chocolate soaring more than 1600%.

Fairtrade Australia and New Zealand chief executive Stephen Knapp says the growth is being driven by consumer demand, as awareness of the brand continues to grow.

Coffee remains the biggest selling fairtrade product in New Zealand with sales increasing by $2 million to $18 million last year.
