An investment company in Beijing says the wood processing sector in New Zealand is in crisis because of the way timber is exported.

Winstone Pulp International has laid off 44 more staff at its Tangiwai Sawmill near Ohakune this week, bringing the number of job losses in the sector in two months to nearly 150.

Mahon China Investment Management Ltd managing director David Mahon says New Zealand needs to take a more proactive approach in order to get more value from forestry.
