No regulation needed of new wholesale broadband service

The Commerce Commission has decided Telecom's new wholesale broadband service does not need to be regulated.

The commission believes VDSL2 (very-high bit-rate digital subscriber line), incorporates features which are not included in the regulated unbundled bitstream access determination.

That service allows other companies to supply a range of broadband services to retail customers using Telecom's copper loop.

Telecommunications Commissioner Ross Patterson says there has been much debate about the willingness of consumers to pay for upgraded broadband services, so it is appropriate that the price is set by the market.
