Exporters expect increased orders, higher profits

The vast majority of exporters are feeling bullish about their prospects next year, according to a survey by Export New Zealand.

Of the 251 exporters questioned, 80% expect increased orders across all markets, while over half expect profits to improve next year.

Export NZ executive director Catherine Beard says the survey shows exporters believe exchange rate volatility, not the high New Zealand dollar, is one of the major barriers to growth.

She says it was surprising to find that many exporters say financial crisis has actually helped them to expand and get into for new markets.

However, she says exporters want more information about what Government help is on offer, and half of them believe the Government-funded New Zealand Trade and Enterprise could do better.

New Zealand Trade and Enterprise says it's pleased 62% of survey respondents see the organisation as better than average, but it recognises it isn't perfect, and is always looking to improve its service.

It recently initiated a review of its business, and says it will speak with Export New Zealand to delve deeper into the survey's findings, and understand what's driving exporters' views of its service.
