Freightways' first quarter earnings have slipped slightly, and the company expects the economic recovery to remain slow.

The listed courier and information management firm made $6.7 million in the three months to the end of September, 4% less than the same period last year, largely because of higher bank costs. Revenue rose four percent to $85 million.

Freightways' managing director Dean Bracewell says the company's information management division is expected to continue its sound growth, but he's cautious about its core express package and business mail division.

Mr Bracewell expects the economic recovery to remain slow, but says the company will benefit from an improving Australian economy and growth in other markets.

He says the earthquake in Canterbury on 4 September affected all the company's operations in Christchurch in some way, but the impact isn't expected to be material.
