Swiss reject tax treaty with US

A tax agreement between the United States and Switzerland has been rejected by the lower house of the Swiss parliament.

The deal would have paved the way for UBS to disclose bank account details to US tax authorities.

The deal was agreed in order to head off possible US charges against the bank for aiding tax evasion, which had admitted that it helped US citizens evade their taxes.

Berne had promised Washington that account details would be made available by the end of August.

The deal will have to go back to the Swiss Senate for revision.

The US had warned it would take legal action if Switzerland reneged on the deal.
