Stewart has stepped down so that he can return to his home in Europe, after joining the company in February 2019.

Sky TV chairperson Philip Bowman, said the board came to a mutual agreement with Stewart for him to resign.

"Since joining Sky ... Martin has led a successful turnaround and the Board acknowledges his significant contribution. We thank him for his significant contribution to Sky."

Bowman said the company's chief customer officer, Sophie Moloney, had been promoted to the top job, effectively immediately.

She is the first woman to lead the company.

"She brings excellent commercial and strategic thinking, a proven record of developing new business opportunities, strong leadership skills and successful delivery," Bowman said.

Moloney has 20 years experience working in international media, including roles with Sky UK and Sky News Arabia, as well as Sky New Zealand.

Stewart would stay on as needed over the next three months to assist with the transition.

Moloney's annual base salary would be $932,500.
