Wholesale trade sales stay down

Statistics New Zealand says wholesale trade sales have continued to decline for a record fifth successive quarter.

The figures monitor the level of activity in the wholesale trade sector, which supplies retailers.

Sales fell a seasonally-adjusted 0.8% to $20.2 billion in the three months to September - about the same level last experienced nearly three years ago.

Westpac Bank senior economist Doug Steel says it confirms soft sales in the first half of the year.
