Supermarket chain Woolworths says sales in New Zealand have increased nearly 4% to $5 billion over the past year.

The Australian retailer which owns the Woolworths, Countdown and Foodtown chains in New Zealand, says sales at stores open at least a year over the fourth quarter picked up further to rise 5.5%.

The retailer says it was pleased with its performance in New Zealand in the face of the poor economic conditions.

It says sales were helped by store refurbishments and a more solid supply chain.
