Microsoft has completed its purchase of Nokia's mobile phone business for 5.44 billion euros ($US7.5 billion).

Completion of the deal was delayed by a hold-up in regulatory approvals.

The BBC reports the sale will mean the end of production of mobile phones by Nokia. Six years ago, the firm was the leading player in the mobile phone market, but was unable to keep up with its rivals.

The Finnish company will now focus on networks, mapping services and technology development and licences.
