The number of visitors staying in hotels, motels and backpackers fell in December.
Official figures show guest nights dipped 0.2 percent in the month, following a 1.7 percent rise in November.
North Island guest nights rose 0.4 percent, while South Island guest nights fell 1.2 percent.
Domestic guest nights fell 0.8 percent, and international guest nights rose 0.5 percent.
