The country's main electronic payments provider, Paymark, says spending through its network jumped more than 8% in October compared with the same month last year.
Paymark processes around three quarters of all electronic transactions.
The payments provider says seasonally adjusted spending rose 1.7% from September, and when fuel is excluded, spending rose 2.5%.
Double digit growth was recorded in hardware stores, liquor outlets and cafes and restaurants.
Paymark acting chief executive Paul Whiston says spending has bounced back from a slow period towards the end of September.
Mr Whiston says Auckland, Canterbury and Marlborough all recorded spending increases of more than 10%.
The West Coast was the only region to record a fall in spending growth, down nearly 2%.
