Air New Zealand is on the lookout for new alliances, because the partnerships will be a key driver of growth in the next five years.
The company has even recently created a special team charged solely with investigating and creating these new partnerships.
At the airline's annual meeting in Auckland on Friday, Air New Zealand chief executive Christopher Luxon said creating such alliances, particularly in the Pacific, will be crucial to its future success.
He said there was the opportunity to do business all around the Pacific Rim, including markets in the America's, Asia and Australasia.
But Mr Luxon said Air New Zealand needed to partner with other airlines which had good sales and distribution strengths in their home markets.
Mr Luxon was not prepared to say which airlines Air New Zealand is holding discussions with, but said the company had on-going conversations with airlines all around the Pacific rim.
He said the airline was looking for the best commercial outcome for the airline, but also airlines that have a product in service that was more similar to Air New Zealand.
