The chief executive of the retirement village operator, Summerset, has won two of seven awards at the inaugural Women in Governance Awards.

Norah Barlow, who has led Summerset since 2002, won the Gender Diversity in Leadership and the Excellence in Leadership awards which aim to celebrate gender diversity to empower the next generation of women into governance roles.

Three of six members of the Summerset executive team are women, including Norah Barlow, and they run 16 villages with more than 2200 residents and about 500 staff.

The awards were organised by a new organisation, Women on Boards, which was established by Massey University alumni, Dr Rosanne Hawarden and Lesley Whyte.
