A survey of more than 1000 small to medium-sized businesses has found 41% are owned and operated by women, up from 37% three years ago.

The survey by accounting firm MYOB found that, on average, women employ more staff than men.

Of women running businesses, 25% work in rural areas compared with only 19% of male business owners.
