The International Energy Agency says the United States will be the world's biggest oil producer by 2017.
It says that a steep rise in shale gas production is pushing the US towards self sufficiency in energy by 2035
The agency says new technology means that oil and gas sites which were difficult to get to, are now easier and cheaper to access.
