Report issued by Todd on benefits of fracking

5:09 pm on 8 November 2012

Todd Energy has issued a report on the benefits of fracking, saying the practice is safe and crucial for New Zealand's long term gas supply.

Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, involves injecting water, sand and chemicals into oil or gas reservoirs to crack open rock. The process has been used in Taranaki for more than 20 years.

The report is the company's submission to the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment.

Her report on the results of an inquiry into fracking is due in three weeks.

Todd Energy says the practice is safe in New Zealand and is not harming the environment.

Chief executive Paul Moore says the company wants to be transparent and the public to read an objective piece of work that has been independently reviewed.

Green MP Gareth Hughes said Todd Energy is playing politics prior to the release of the Commissioner's findings into the practice.
