Rare earth complaint blocked

12:32 pm on 11 July 2012

China has blocked a complaint to the World Trade Organisation brought by the European Union, the United States and Japan.

They claim that China is restricting access to rare earth metals and pushing prices higher.

Rare earth metals are used in high tech gadgets like mobiles, computers and cars. China produces 97% of the world's supply.

The BBC reports the Chinese move means a freshly complaint will likely come before the WTO in the next two weeks.
