KiwiRail has spent almost $2.8 million in the past three years re-painting and re-branding its locomotive fleet.
More than $1 million was spent on this in each of the past two financial years.
Figures also show in the same period KiwiRail spent almost $11 million on advertising, including about $6 million promoting Interislander services.
Almost $4 million was spent on the TranzScenic services, which include the Overlander.
