Auckland taps the world for waterfront ideas

Auckland City is tapping the leaders of waterfront developments around the world for ideas on the best designs and attracting investment to Auckland's waterfront.

Delegates from eight cities including San Francisco, Cape Town and Hong Kong will be sharing their experiences and giving advice at the Sea Edge symposium in Auckland later this month.

A PriceWaterhouseCoopers report says that by 2040 Auckland waterfront will annually generate $4.29 billion and create 40,000 jobs.

So far, one third of the waterfront has been revitalised and the city's leaders believe it is at a critical point.

Waterfront Auckland chairman Bob Harvey says the biggest issue is economic development with the waterfront needing $400 million in investment.

Bob Harvey says he is already looking at developments such as floating buildings, a silicon city and turning harbour dredgings into an island.
