UCOL to cut 40 jobs

9:50 pm on 2 June 2016

A tertiary institution's decision to disestablish about 40 jobs will affect mostly women in support roles, according to the Tertiary Education Union.

The union says the Universal College of Learning (UCOL), which is primarily based in Palmerston North, is restructuring roles in nursing, disability support and at its library.

It said UCOL wanted to replace the jobs with a comparatively smaller number of full-time roles.

An organiser for the union, Heather Warren, said part-time work was pivotal for many women, as they may have family commitments.

The college is yet to respond to a request for comment.
