New walking track opens north of Wellington

8:32 am on 9 April 2016

About 1000 people are expected to try out a new walking track north of Wellington today.

The 10 kilometre track between Paekakariki and Pukerua Bay, which is being opened this morning, is the latest addition to the Te Araroa trail which will run from Cape Reinga to Bluff.

Te Araroa Trust's chief executive Rob Wakelin said the track had swing bridges, and will take most people about four hours to walk one way.

Local interest has been so high, organisers have had to limit the number of people who can walk it today.

The section of trail cost $1.4 million to complete.
