Honey produced by Hawke's Bay Regional Prison is being given away to the local community.

Almost 38 kilograms of honey was extracted from the Young Offenders Unit's four hives recently.

The honey, known as Rangatahi Honey, was given to Women's Refuge and families in need, and would also be used in the prison kitchen.

The hives were used as a teaching tool for prisoners studying a 12-month Certificate in Apiculture.
